Closet Cleanout 101: How to Decide What to Keep, Donate, or Sell

Closet Cleanout 101: How to Decide What to Keep, Donate, or Sell

Have you ever opened your closet only to see it cluttered with clothing items you never wear? None of these pieces feels like you anymore. The more you look for something to wear, the more stressed you become. If this sounds like you, it might be time for a good old closet cleanout!

Take Everything Out (Declutter the Right Way)

The first step is emptying your closet. Removing the clutter and seeing those extra shelves you forgot were there will bring about immediate relief. Closet organization is always easier with a fresh start!

What to Keep

Think of Marie Kondo’s famous question: Does it spark joy? Is it the loungewear you got for your birthday one year? Is it that blue button-down you bought for your first job? Maybe it’s that sweater your grandmother knitted you for Christmas. If it feels like you, it probably deserves a spot in your closet.

You’re also going to want to think about your closet essentials. Keep versatile basics & seasonal outfits. Otherwise, you might find yourself pretty chilly in the winter because you only kept your summer pieces.

And here’s another key point: only keep items that fit you right now and fit you well. Holding on to clothes for a “future self” adds unnecessary mental weight. Your wardrobe should make you feel confident and comfortable in the body you’re in today. Many people hold onto trendy pieces or items that looked amazing on someone else, only to pass them over again and again when getting dressed. If you don’t love the fit—or the way you feel wearing it—release yourself from the stress and consign that item.

What to Donate

Sometimes your used clothing may be in good condition, but not suitable for sale. These are the clothes to donate. Some places to go to (but are not limited to):

  • Goodwill – well-known, but be mindful that they don’t accept everything.

  • Homeless shelters – seasonal clothing (coats, socks, sturdy shoes) are usually most valuable.

  • Local women’s shelters or domestic violence shelters – often in need of practical clothing, especially for children and women.

When donating, be mindful that many charities can get overwhelmed with low-quality items. Focus on giving gently used, practical pieces that shelters or programs can truly use. Call ahead and tell them what you have, the sizes and condition and make sure they have a need for these donations.

What to Sell

When it comes to deciding which items to sell, here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Is it high-quality?

  • Is it gently used?

  • Is it from a recognizable brand?

If the answers are yes, it’s an indication that you should resell. Consider consigning your preloved clothing with Luqsee. Clean out your closet, earn some extra cash, and give your clothing a new home today.

Bottom Line

During your closet cleanout, make sure to keep what you love, donate what helps others, and sell what has value. Every piece resold or responsibly donated means one less item ending up in a landfill.

And don’t stop there! Once you’ve cleared out the clutter, make a list of what your wardrobe is missing. Do you have a versatile dress for a party or nice dinner? A proper raincoat and boots for fall and winter? Knowing your wardrobe gaps helps you shop more mindfully. And when you do, always consider high-quality preloved pieces that are both purposeful and sustainable.

So don’t hesitate! Consign your gently used clothes with Luqsee and declutter with purpose!
